Researching the original photograph
Boston Public Library local history resources
The library's local history resources connect researchers with digitized collections and Boston-related material, including newspaper photograph holdings.
A research approach for this collection
A newspaper caption can supply an event date that is missing from a family print. Check whether the date describes the event, the exposure or publication. Save the catalogue record alongside a reference image so these dates do not become interchangeable.
Keep research evidence separate from restoration
The institution linked above is an independent research resource, with no affiliation or restoration partnership implied. Its catalogue may contain only part of its holdings. Check the individual record for access and reuse conditions.
Keep an unedited digital copy, including inscriptions and the back of the print. AI restoration can alter faces, lettering and other details; an edited image cannot establish a historical identity or recover evidence that is absent from the original.
For an image you own or have permission to process, compare the result with your original before sharing it. See our before-and-after examples and photo restoration guides for further context.
