For a park outing, compare named park features; for a neighborhood portrait, start with the relevant community collection. Preserve the creator and collection credit. Do not use a photograph from another neighborhood as a substitute for a missing detail in your family image.

Choosing a collection before comparing photographs

Start by classifying what you can actually see: a park outing, a neighborhood street, an organization meeting or an indoor portrait. The library digital collections directory provides different starting points for these subjects. Search a visible institution name before adding a family surname that may never have appeared in a catalogue caption.

For a park or street comparison, note the viewpoint and the arrangement of permanent features. For a community gathering, preserve the event wording and creator credit from the archive record. Do not treat a resemblance between two faces as an identification. If the reference adds context but does not identify the scene, describe that limited relationship in the caption accompanying your restored image.

Keep research evidence separate from restoration
