A research approach for this collection

Use a neighborhood, landmark or photographer credit to narrow a regional search. The same studio may have photographed several communities, so a studio imprint alone does not prove where a portrait was taken. Keep the imprint visible in your unedited scan.

Separating the photograph location from the studio address

A studio address printed on a portrait is a research clue about the photographer, not necessarily the place shown in the picture. Transcribe the imprint and preserve its spelling before researching it. For an outdoor scene, search a visible landmark or neighborhood independently of the studio name.

For photographs of library buildings, LAPL also provides a library images index. That focused resource can be more useful than a general search when the building is recognizable. Keep the reference caption, date and image identifier with your notes; do not fill a missing architectural detail in your family image solely because a reference photograph shows it.

Keep research evidence separate from restoration

Keep an unedited digital copy, including inscriptions and the back of the print. AI restoration can alter faces, lettering and other details; an edited image cannot establish a historical identity or recover evidence that is absent from the original.
